The Era Of Indian Classical Music.

There can never be a definite answer to when music came into existence. But yes, Indian classical music is one of the oldest music in the world. Indian classical music is also known as Shastriya Sangeet. There are three eras of Indian classical music.

Vedic Era:

Vedic era is the most ancient period of history and is believed to be dated around 500 B.C. There are four Vedas in all – Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda. Among the four Vedas, Sama Veda is considered the origin of Indian music. During that period, music was used as a medium for prayer in religious ceremonies. It is also believed that the sages used to sing songs, and their wives used to play instruments like Veena. It is said that during Ramayan and Mahabharat, the seven swars known as Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni came into existence. 

Medieval Era:

It is in this era where music gradually evolved. From the 7th to the 13th century AD, Indian music played a crucial role in India and outside. Here Indian music was getting popularize. Some great books were written, such as Jaidev’s ‘Gitogobindo’ and Sarangdev’s ‘Sangeet Ratnakar.’This was the time of kings and queens.

Modern Era:

The modern era started at the end of the eighteenth century. This era saw the replacements of Muslim rulers by the British, who were different from Indian culture and mainly classical music. Here, music became the core part of entertainment and was widely spread. This era witnessed many gems like Ustad Amir Khan, Ustad Faiz Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, etc. The legacy left behind by these legends is still in the hearts of everyone.
