Rajkummar Rao on how big-budget films perform at the box office: It’s okay if my films don’t make 100 crore

Sanya Malhotra and Rajkummar Rao’s upcoming movie, Hit: The First Case, is now under production. The actor’s most recent film, Badhaai Do, was released to mixed reviews but received generally positive feedback from the fans. In an interview with India Today, the actor recently discussed a specific film genre that appears to be successful at the box office. South Indian movies like Pushpa, KGF 2, and Vikram have ruled the box office in recent months.

Rajkummar remarked on the popularity of these big-budget action movies, saying, “No one knows the formula of a hit film; you have to keep trying and then leave it to destiny. I haven’t thought about why South films are doing well, maybe because they are good films, the hard work shows. But I believe cinema goes through phases. At one point, we were shooting songs in Switzerland, then we started telling small-town stories, and now it is time for larger-than-life cinema that the South offers.”

The actor agrees that his other priorities are more important, though. Rajkumar continued, “But, as an actor, I rather do films I can be proud of not, not necessarily something that is working. I can keep telling stories as long as my producers don’t lose money. I would rather do films I will be proud of. I don’t want to be part of a herd. It is okay if my films don’t make Rs 100 crore at the box office.”

Alongside Sanya Malhotra, Rajkummar Rao will portray an investigator in his next movie, Hit: The First Case. The film will be released to hit theatres on July 15, 2022.
