Writing With Fire: India’s First Entry For Best Documentary At Oscars 2022

Writing With Fire, directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, has bagged a nomination at Oscars 2022. It has been nominated for the Best Documentary Feature award, which is India’s first entry in this category.

The official handle of the Academy Awards shared the news on Twitter. They posted the image mentioning the top five Nominees of Documentary Feature. Along with India’s Writing With Fire, Ascension, Attica, Flee, and Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) has been nominated.

Debutant director Rintu Thomas shared the reaction of her and Team Writing With Fire on Twitter as the nomination was announced. She posted the video and captioned it, “Oh My God!!!! Writing With Fire just got nominated for @TheAcademy  Award. Oh My God!!!!!!!! #OscarNoms #WritingWithFire.”

Directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, Writing with Fire is about the newspaper Khabar Lahariya, and it’s India’s only rural newspaper run by Dalit women since 2002. Led by Meera, their chief reporter, the feature documentary brings the story of this group of ambitious Dalit wonder women as they move from print to the digital medium in today’s changing times.

Writing With Fire has previously won 28 international awards, including Sundance Film Festival in January. In that festival, it won two awards: Special jury and Audience Awards at the World Cinema Documentary competition.

The Academy Award ceremony will take place at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on March 27.
