Filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar announced his next film, On Shaheed Diwas, on March 23, a biopic on the revolutionary freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. The film has been titled Swatantra Veer Savarkar, and Randeep Hooda plays the titular role.
Mahesh shared the update about the film on his Twitter handle. He posted some pictures and captioned it, “Kuch kahaniyaan batayi jaati hai aur kuch jee jaati hain! Grateful, excited and honoured to be part of # SwatantraVeerSavarkar’s biopic.”
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was an Indian politician, activist, and writer. Born on May 28, 1883, he was a freedom fighter and was a leading figure in the Hindu Mahasabha. Savarkar was arrested and ordered to be deported to India for his connections with the revolutionary group India House. Savarkar was sentenced to two life terms of imprisonment totalling fifty years and was moved to the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
As per the Indiatoday report, speaking about bringing Veer Savarkar’s story to the screen, Randeep said, “There are many heroes that have played their part in getting us our independence. However, not everyone has got their due. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is the most misunderstood, debated and influential of these unsung heroes, and his story must be told. I am delighted to collaborate with Sandeep after Sarabjit for Swatantra Veer Savarkar. It will be yet another challenging role to portray.”
Mahesh Manjrekar added, “This is the right time to tell the stories which we had ignored. Swatantra Veer Savarkar will be an edgy cinematic narrative that will force us to revisit our history. I have wanted to collaborate with Sandeep Singh, and I am glad that we are doing this film together.”
