Recently, actor Anupam Kher spoke out about the failure of boycott trends against Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, which continues to lead the box office. The Siddharth Anand-directed movie grossed 832.2 crores in just 12 days globally.
The first track from the film, Besharam Rang, was out last year, and Pathaan immediately became the centre of controversy. Many people criticized it because of Deepika’s clothes, especially her saffron bikini. Some people were outraged by the song and opposed it because they thought it wounded their religious sentiments. A trend demanding the movie’s boycott started on social media. DNA reported Anupam as saying the following when discussing how Pathaan achieved success exceeding all expectations, “Aap trend dekh ke thodi picture dekhne jaoge. Koi bhi nahi jaata trend padh ke. Agar aapko trailer aacha laga toh aap jayege film dekhne. Jab pitcute aachi hai toh duniya ki koi takat nahi rok sakti. Log toh vengeance se jaate hai ki ‘mujhe toh dekhni hai film.”
Anupam further added, “The film audience never boycotted cinema. We had gone through the pandemic and a lockdown, and people were urged to sit in their homes. This has happened after 100 years or so. During this phase, audiences look out for other means of entertainment. The OTT platforms saw a boost, and they started watching the films with ease. To bring them out of fear takes some time.”
