However, when BJP came into force later, the ban was lifted and aired on Doordarshan.
2- Bandit Queen
This film is a biopic of Phoolan Devi, a feared woman dacoit who led a gang of bandits in Northern India. The film, directed by Bafta-winner Shekhar Kapur, was criticised for its nude scenes by lead actress Seema Diswas, excessive use of abusive language, sexual content and nudity.
3- Paanch
Anurag Kashyap is known as India’s one of most pioneer directors but is also known for the controversial movies he makes. His directorial debut, Paanch, revolves around the life of five band members entangled in a tragic kidnapping plot and remains unreleased until today. Black Friday is another movie by Anurag Kashyap based on the Mumbai bomb blast of 1993. The Bombay high court decided to suspend the release until the trial was over. So, Anurag Kashyap had to wait for another 3 years until Black Friday hit the cinema.
5- Padmaavat
Padmaavat is the latest film to court controversies as some communities from Rajasthan felt that it misrepresents history and was damaging their reputation. The movie was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and was led by Deepika Padukone, who portrays the historical queen Padmaavat in the film.
