Sunny Deol discloses he requested Akshay Kumar not to release OMG 2 with Gadar 2

Sunny Deol and his brother Bobby Deol were guests on the latest season of Karan Johar’s popular chat show Koffee With Karan. Sunny discussed the huge box office success of his comeback film Gadar 2 in the episode and said he was “hurt” by the box office clash between his film and the Akshay Kumar film OMG 2.

Sunny told Karan Johar he even called Akshay to request him to avert the clash since Gadar 2 was his big-screen comeback after a long break. However, Akshay stated that the choice to have the film released on August 11 was made by the studio.

Sunny stated, “I haven’t had success for donkey’s years. I didn’t want anybody to come along with it, but you can’t stop anybody. So, obviously, it does hurt you. Then I was like, ‘It doesn’t matter, let’s go along with it.’ But initially, when things were not working out for the longest time, I thought if nobody would release alongside your film, then you would at least get theatres.”

In response to a question about whether he spoke with Akshay at that time, Sunny said, “I asked him, ‘Please don’t do it if it’s in your hands,’ but he said no, the studio, and all that… and they said that anyway, two films can release, so I said, okay, go ahead. I can just request; I can’t do anything more than that.”

August was a fantastic month for the Hindi film industry. Despite their clash at the box office, Gadar 2 and OMG 2 both managed to maintain outstanding figures, shattering the rumor that Bollywood was suffering in the post-COVID era. OMG 2, starring Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi, made about Rs 140 crore at the box office, while Gadar 2 hit the 500 crore milestone.
