Artist Lalitha Lajmi, late actor-filmmaker Guru Dutt’s sister, has passed away. She was 90 years old.
The official handle of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) shared the news of her demise. It tweeted, “With Profound grief and sorrow NGMA, Mumbai, Ministry of Culture, Government of India shares the news of the demise of the veteran artist and printmaker Smt. Lalitha Lajmi left for their heavenly abode this morning(13.02.2023). Our Deepest Condolences. RIP”
In Kolkata, India, in 1932, Lajmi was born to a poet father and a multilingual writer mother. She was an independent artist with a passion for classical dance. She has had several shows at renowned international art galleries in Paris, London, and the Netherlands.
She frequently provided a nuanced history of the contemporary Indian lady in the decades after Independence through her writings.
She played a cameo role in the 2007 Bollywood film Taare Zameen Par starring Aamir Khan and worked on the costume design for an Amol Palekar play. She has also contributed graphic design work to the Hindi film Aghaat.
Captain Gopi Lajmi and she got married. Together with Captain Gopi Lajmi, she has a daughter. Kalpana Lajmi, her daughter, was a Hindi film director as well.
