Kiran Rao took over as director once more and created the comedy-drama Laapataa Ladies. Despite its release last year, the film continues to receive many positive reviews from both critics and fans. The official entry from India for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category was chosen as the film. However, the director became emotional when it was not selected for this year’s Academy Awards shortlist.
Laapataa Ladies received Best Film (Critics’ Choice) at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne and was presented at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. Everyone had great expectations when it was selected as India’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. Unfortunately, the film was not nominated, disappointing many people, especially Kiran Rao.
As a result, the film’s official Instagram account posted a lengthy message on December 18 to inform fans that it isn’t going to this year’s Academy Awards. Kiran quickly reshared the photo on her Instagram page, adding a red heart, a folded hand emoticon, and an emotional emoji.
Despite the disappointment of not being able to attend the Academy Awards, the Laapataa Ladies team expressed their resilience in an emotional post on their official social media page. They were highly grateful for the unwavering belief and support they received along this journey, inspiring many with their strength.
A few words from their message stated, “We extend our gratitude to the Academy members and the FFI jury for considering our film. To be included in this prestigious process alongside some of the finest films from across the world is an honor in itself. Our heartfelt thanks to all the audiences worldwide who have expressed their love and support for our film.”
The team congratulated each of the top 15 shortlisted films and wished them luck in the upcoming award stages. Shahana Goswami’s Hindi-language film Santosh, directed by Santosh, was shortlisted for the Oscars as the United Kingdom’s entry in the Documentary Short Film category, although Laapataa Ladies did not.
