GHAZAL SINGER PANKAJ UDHAS PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 72

Pankaj Udhas, a legendary musician and Padmashri winner passed away yesterday on February 26. The veteran ghazal singer, who was well-known for songs like Chandi Jai Rang and Chitti Ayi Hai, passed away after a protracted illness. The veteran singer reportedly passed away at Breach Candy Hospital.

Nayaab Udhas, his daughter, shared the news on Instagram, writing, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform of sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to prolonged illness.”

Through his contributions to Indian pop music and Hindi film, Pankaj Udhas was widely recognized. His ghazal album “Aahat” brought him recognition in 1980, and he continued to achieve success with songs like “Mukarar,” “Tarrannum,” and “Mehfil.” His “Chitthi Aayee Hai” song from the movie “Naam” shot to fame. Among the honours bestowed upon Udhas is the Padma Shri, awarded in 2006. He died at the age of 72.

Prime Minister Modi wrote while paying tribute, “We mourn the loss of Pankaj Udhas Ji, whose singing conveyed a range of emotions and whose Ghazals spoke directly to the soul. He was a beacon of Indian music whose melodies transcended generations. I recall my various interactions with him over the years. His departure leaves a void that can never be filled in the music world. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Bollywood stars and musicians showered their condolences on Monday. In a heartfelt Instagram video, actor Anupam Kher expressed his condolences for the veteran singer’s loss.

Sonu Nigam, a playback singer from Bollywood, also expressed his condolences to the veteran singer on Instagram. He stated, “One of the most important part of my childhood, is lost today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, I will miss you forever. My heart cries, knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti.”

On Tuesday, the well-known ghazal singer’s final ceremonies will take place. On Monday, Nayaab Udhas, the late singer’s daughter, posted on Instagram.

It stated, “In loving memory of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas. With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of his demise on the 26 of February 2024 due to a prolonged illness. The funeral will occur on Tuesday, February 27, from 3 to 5 pm. Venue: Hindu Crematorium. Worli (Mumbai) Landmark Opp. Four Seasons: Dr E Muses Rd. Worli. The Udhas Family.”
