Diljit Dosanjh’s first look from his upcoming movie, Chamkila, has been released and stunned his admirers. The singer-actor is pictured without his turban in the short teaser, which Netflix unveiled on Tuesday morning. Although the actor has not verified it, he appears to be wearing a wig. In the Imtiaz Ali movie, he portrays Amar Singh Chamkila, a singer from Punjab who has sold the most records. Parineeti Chopra will play his partner Amarjot Kaur in the film.
The caption for the teaser that Netflix posted read, “Jo naam saalon se aapke dil aur dimaag pe chaaya hai woh ab aapke saamne aaya hai. Watch the untold story of Punjab’s highest record-selling artist, Amar Singh #Chamkila, coming soon only on Netflix!”
The teaser was praised by members of the Punjabi music community, such as Prabh Bains and Desi Crew, although many also took issue with the movie’s use of Hindi rather than Punjabi. However, some of Diljit’s supporters expressed disappointment at watching the actor with no turban.
The Punjabi-set movie stars Diljit and Parineeti as the real-life singing duo Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur, who was murdered in 1988 along with two other band members in an unsolved assassination.
