Bollywood Art director Nitin Desai dies by suicide at the age of 57

This morning, at the age of 57, national award-winning art director Nitin Desai passed away. He was reportedly found hanging inside his own ND Studios in Karjat after committing suicide. Numerous Bollywood stars, including Riteish Deshmukh, Madhur Bhandarkar, Vivek Agnihotri, Sanjay Dutt, Parineeti Chopra, Neil Nitin Mukesh, and others, expressed their condolences and paid tribute to Desai shortly after hearing of the tragic news.

The death of art director Nitin Desai was mourned by many film industry celebrities, who expressed their condolences to his family on social media.

Riteish Deshmukh stated on Twitter, “Deeply shocked to know that #NitinDesai, a legendary Production Designer who has contributed immensely to the growth of Indian cinema, is no more—my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. I had known him for years. soft-spoken, humble, ambitious & a visionary… you will be missed, my friend. Om Shanti.”

Hema Malini shared an old photo of Desai and expressed her sorrow at his passing. She penned, “Shocking news this morning – Art Director Nitin Desai is no more. Such a warm human being, associated with many of my projects and ballets; his passing is a terrible loss to the film industry. May he find peace wherever he is.”

Parineeti Chopra, an actress, expressed her sadness by stating, “Heartbreaking to hear about Nitin sir. #NitinDesai. His groundbreaking work, wisdom and artistry will be remembered forever. Rest in peace, sir.”

As per a report in India Today, Mahesh Baldi, a BJP local MLA from Karjat, revealed that Nitin Desai committed suicide because of the financial crisis. He stated, “Nitin Desai’s ND studio comes in my constituency; the financial crisis was going on for many days and due to that, he committed suicide in ND studio this morning.”

Nitin Desai designed magnificent sets for many big-budget movies. He collaborated with several well-known cinema filmmakers, including Rajkumar Hirani in Munna Bhai MBBS and Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. He also worked with Vidhu Vinod Chopra in 1942: A Love Story and Ashutosh Gowarikar in Jodha Akbar and Lagaan. Four National Awards for Best Art Direction were given to him.
