NewJeans set a new milestone among girl groups in history by selling more than one million copies of their debut album, NewJeans, according to Circle Chart. Hence, since SECHSKIES’ ‘School Byeolgok’ in 1997, NewJeans’ debut album is the first K-Pop group’s debut album to sell more than 1 million copies in 26 years.
The progress of NewJeans since their debut is by far astounding. They surprised the domestic music industry with their astonishing arrival and are now swiftly dominating the world market and breaking records. They stand out more amongst 4th generation girl groups due to their fastest speed and, more importantly, their potential for long-term success. Seven months after its debut, NewJeans has proven itself as the “World Queen.”
Last year, on July 22, NewJeans made its debut. Since Min Hee Jin, a former CEO of SM Entertainment’s Ador, founded the group, they attracted attention as “Min Hee Jin’s girl group” during the period of their debut. NewJeans’ decision to release this content first without the customary launch promotion was unconventional, yet it was successful with the MZ generation. NewJeans rose to the top right after they made their debut. Three triple title tracks, Attention, Cookie and Hype Boy, from NewJeans’ debut album, launched on August 1 last year, marked their unconventional entry. They prevailed through high-quality content rather than long and tedious pre-promotion. And very immediately after they appeared, they started to get the most attention as a team.
With their upcoming album, NewJeans will continue their successes. They are having a significant impact on the world market with their single album, “OMG.” The pre-released single “Ditto,” which was followed by “OMG,” has held the top spot on key music charts for eight weeks straight, including Melon, the biggest music site in Korea. It is notable that even the words “Hype Boy” and “Attention” are arranged side by side at the top.
