Actress Vidya Balan will return to the big screen in the upcoming murder-mystery movie Neeyat, which reunites her with Shakuntala Devi director Anu Menon. 2019’s Mission Mangal was Vidya’s last theatrical release. Since then, she has been in the streaming films Sherni, Shakuntala Devi and Jalsa.
She portrays the investigator Mira Rao in Neeyat, who investigates a murder investigation during a rich man’s party in the Scottish countryside. When Ashish Kapoor (Ram Kapoor), a billionaire, is killed, his friends and family, each hiding something, come under suspicion. Shahana Goswami, Neeraj Kabi, Rahul Bose, Prajakta Koli, Shashank Arora, and others portray the suspects. Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel And Then There Were None, adapted for cinema and television numerous times, appears to be the inspiration for the story hinted at in the teaser. But most importantly, no detective character was at the centre of that tale.
When Vidya’s Mira Rao arrives to conduct the investigation, she immediately starts questioning the suspects. She discovers that they all harboured grudges against Ashish Kapoor and had motives to harm him.
With dialogue by Kausar Munir, Neeyat was penned by Priya Venkataraman, Anu Menon, Advaita Kala, and Girvani Dhyani. On July 7, Neeyat is expected to premiere in theatres, followed by a release on Prime Video.
