Before its theatrical release on June 16, 2023, Pixar’s 27th animated feature will make its world premiere on the closing night of the Cannes Film Festival on May 27. The picture, which will be screened as the festival’s closing feature out of competition, will be the famed studio’s fourth choice at the event, joining previous favourites “Up,” “Inside Out,” and “Soul.”
Pixar’s chief creative officer, Pete Docter, said this year’s return to Cannes is particularly special for the studio. “As we all emerge from our pandemic cocoons and come together in story rooms, animation dailies and impromptu brainstorming sessions, it’s a joy and honour to have Pixar back on La Croisette,” said Docter. “Directed by the extraordinary storyteller Peter Sohn, ‘Elemental’ is so funny, full of heart and, frankly, stunning. It was created for audiences to experience on the big screen, and I love that it’ll make its World Premiere at Cannes.”
Docter, Sohn and producer Denise Ream will join the film’s voice cast members at the event. Cannes has hosted the international competition since 1946. “For many years, the Cannes Film Festival has welcomed animated films from around the world,” said Thierry Frémaux, general delegate, Cannes Film Festival. “Pixar Animation Studios, with ‘Up’—directed by Pete Docter—made Cannes history by opening the 62nd edition in 2009. It was a wonderful event! This is another great opportunity to present the amazing ‘Elemental’ at this 76th Cannes Film Festival’s closing and think about our lives in such a powerful way.”
A brand-new, original feature film from Disney and Pixar, “Elemental”, is set in Element City, a community where citizens of the elements of fire, water, land, and air coexist. Ember, a fierce, witty, and fiery young woman, is introduced in the novel. Her friendship with Wade, a fun, sentimental, go-with-the-flow person, challenges her assumptions about the world they live in. Pixar’s new short “Carl’s Date” is “Elemental”‘s introduction.
On June 16, 2023, Disney India will release Elemental exclusively in theatres in both English and Hindi.
