Sanjay Leela Bhansali is back with another historical drama with a massive ensemble in Heeramandi. He says he has done the casting intuitively rather than finding the perfect cast for the role.
Talking to Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, Sanjay mentioned how the casting of Heeramandi has been done and the process of interpreting the roles.
When asked about casting an impressive ensemble cast of Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Sheikh, filmmaker Sanjay said, “They are not perfect for their characters at all. And, of course, they are not perfect. It is exciting to discover how they will interpret the role. A role could be interpreted in so many ways, but what Manish Koirala did with the role, and then perhaps by the end of it, I might know whether I’d cast them correctly or not.”
“Sonakshi, besides her beauty, stardom, and aura, what does she will bring to me, or what Aditi Rao would bring to the table, I have done my casting intuitively, as I have always wanted to work with each one of them, and they are an amazing talent, all of them” added Sanjay.
Heeramandi marks the first-ever long-format digital release for Sanjay, who believes it’s a big transition for him.
He said, “I have made big films but shifting to digital makes it even bigger for me…Heeramandi’ is my biggest project so far. For me, creating a piece of audio-visual art is to make it creative, immersive, and emotionally appealing and digital allows me to delve deeper.”
In the titular pre-Independence area, three generations of courtesans are depicted in the historical epic Heeramandi. Netflix will shortly offer the series for streaming.
